What kid doesn’t love to camp? There’s something exciting about pitching a tent, and making it cozy with sleeping bags and blankets, snacks and candy, comic books and Barbie dolls, and of course a flashlight.

Camping in the winter with kids can pose an extra challenge. If your kids are unaccustomed to camping in winter, it’s wise to keep the trip to a couple of nights, at a destination that’s not too far away. When it comes to clothing, overestimate your clothing needs. Definitely pack plenty of warm clothes and thick socks, and ensure everyone has a warm, waterproof wind breaker. Of course, never go anywhere without your map and compass, and remember than snow can slow you down, so plan on your hike taking longer than expected.

And after an adventurous day outdoors, it’s time to come back to base camp and enjoy a piping hot meal to warm everyone up. Fire up your portable stove and grill, and cook comfort foods like soup, beans, sausages. After relaxing with a hot chocolate, it’s time for the kids to get a good night’s sleep in their kids sleeping bags.

Even in my early 20s, I viewed babies as loud and obnoxious creatures who kept you awake all night, depriving you of much-needed sleep. I fantasized about having a beautiful library room in my house one day, not a nursery with a cradle and infant crib bedding.

That is, until my older sister had her first baby, Parker Anne. From the first moment I saw Parker, I just couldn’t resist my new niece. She smelled so clean and powdery, and her skin couldn’t be softer. The way she scrunched up her small lips and wiggled her fingers, the way her eye lids fluttered when she was sleeping – everything she did was magical.

Now, Parker is three months old, and I’m your typical doting aunt who likes to shower her niece in presents: cute rattles and baby toys, adorable onesies, and even a pretty crib bedding set with flowers and fairies on it. It’s true: Parker’s arrival has released a ton of endorphins in my brain, and I’m definitely far from the anti-baby person I used to be.

Now that he’s ready to move out of the crib, it’s time to purchase a toddler bed. You’re faced with the dilemma of choosing a bed he’ll be comfortable in. The first decision you have to make is if you want a traditional bed or something a little more imaginative. Choosing the former means it will easily match with the room’s decor and you don’t have to worry about him hating it in 3 months. You can liven up a traditional bed with cartoon characters or sports bedding.

If you decide on the latter, most of your choices include race cars. Not only are there race car and truck shaped toddler beds, there are numerous Disney Cars themed beds. I never understood the fascination with cars, but every boy will be ecstatic when he finds a fire truck or old fashioned race car bed in his room. Is your son a sea lover? Net Kids Wear actually has a pirate ship and a boat shaped toddler bed.

Non-traditional beds will look best with simple bedding, otherwise it can be a bit overwhelming. His room doesn’t need to look like Toy Land but accessorize appropriately so his room is a fun place to be in.
